Grilled fish with summer salad – a light lunch for cyclists

The cyclist in a restaurant – a guest who often isn't sure

You're on your bike. You're sweaty. You're wearing a jersey and a helmet, cycling shoes on your feet and a mudguard that splashes. When you see a restaurant, your first thought is: "Can I even go in there?"

Yes, you can. It's completely normal here. From spring to autumn, plenty of cyclists stop with us every weekend – in jerseys, with sweaty backs and bikes leaning on the fence. We're used to it and nobody will look down on you.

Where to leave your bike

That's the first thing you think about. Leaving an expensive bike outside unattended is out of the question.

You have two options. First: lock your bike to the rack in front of the restaurant and sit on the terrace where you can see it the whole time. Second: take a table at the edge of the terrace and keep your bike right next to you. Some cyclists do exactly that and we don't mind at all.

One word of warning about cleated shoes: if you ride SPD or Look pedals, the smooth floor inside is slippery. We recommend sitting outside or bringing a spare pair of shoes.

What to eat when you're riding on

This is the key question. Many cyclists order a heavy lunch – fried cheese, schnitzel with fries, goulash with dumplings – and then wonder why the next twenty kilometres feel like riding with a stomach full of concrete.

Our recommendation if you're carrying on: salmon trout fillets baked in herb butter. Light meat, little fat, easy to digest. Filling, but not heavy. Or one of our salads – with Norwegian salmon or with feta, for example.

If you don't want a full lunch, have a soup. Warm and quick, it tops up fluids and gives you energy for the second half of your ride.

Tip: instead of "Give me the lightest thing you have", try "I'm riding on – what do you recommend?" Our staff know what to suggest.

Where to ride next

We're right by the harbour, which makes us an ideal halfway stop.

To Veveří Castle. The reservoir classic. The route runs through the woods along the shore, and the reward is a castle above the water. Some sections are hilly and rocky in the forest, so be prepared.

To the dam and Kníničky. A short, easy ride along the reservoir dam – suitable for families with children, too.

Combine it with a boat. In season, pleasure boats sail from the harbour. Check with the operator whether, and on what terms, bikes are allowed on board.

Group rides

If you're riding in a group – six, eight, twelve cyclists – let us know in advance. Not because we couldn't serve you otherwise, but because we can prepare a table outside where you can keep an eye on your bikes, and the food will arrive for everyone at once.

Some cycling groups stop with us regularly – same day, same time. Just call 734 655 433 or fill in the reservation form.

Finally

We know cyclists are in a hurry. You don't have an hour and a half for lunch – you want to eat in thirty or forty minutes and ride on. Tell us. Our staff will adjust the pace and have the bill ready on time. We want you to enjoy a bit of the reason you ride in the first place: movement, nature and good food in the middle of your route.
